Simply having fun can have an incredible benefit for your health. Not only will having fun improve your physical health, but also your mental and emotional health.

1.  Reduce stress

With increased stress comes an increase in Cortisol in the body. Cortisol is known as the “flight or fight hormone” or the “stress hormone” and it can increase to unhealthy levels when you are stressed. Cortisol can help save your life in a dangerous, do-or-die situation and was helpful for our ancient ancestors when they were being chased by man-eating tigers or stampeding mastodons. Fortunately, these dangers no longer threaten us. However, the everyday stress of our jobs and families and environments can create levels of stress that may cause our bodies to gain weight, to lose the ability to fight off infections, and make it difficult to maintain health. Scientific studies have shown that having fun reduces stress and reduces the levels of Cortisol in your body.

2.  Increase Serotonin

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter, or a chemical in the brain that helps regulate many basic processes in the human body – including memory, body temperature, mood, and muscle contraction. Low levels of serotonin can lead to feelings of fatigue and depression. However, enjoying activities you enjoy and simply having fun can naturally increases your serotonin levels.

3.  Boost your energy

Having fun can significantly boost your energy level. Both pain and stress are mentally, emotionally and physically draining. Participating in activities you enjoy, and you find “fun” will help increase your energy and you will feel more mentally awake, less tired and more capable to handle whatever life throws your way.

4.  Improve your memory and your concentration

Using fun activities to increase serotonin levels and reduce cortisol levels in your body will also help to improve your memory and your ability to concentrate. Stressful situations – even low-level stress — can generate forgetfulness and create a feeling of running on auto-pilot. Having fun may alleviate these problems by reducing stress and increasing mental energy.

5.  Improve your mood and your ability to cope

Most people do not have lives that allow for fun to be part of every waking hour, and stress of some sort is pretty much inevitable. Having fun has been shown to increase the quality of sleep and help people sleep more soundly. Fun activities throughout the day will help by reducing cortisone levels and doing something fun to make yourself smile or laugh right before bedtime is very helpful in producing a good night’s sleep. Additionally, you may remember what make you laugh immediately upon waking, and help you start off your day with a smile.

7.  Improve your relationships

Psychologists around the world agree that connecting with other people is a fundamental human need for mental and emotional health. Having fun with others provides benefits that are very significant in maintaining a healthy mind and body – for everyone involved. Having fun with your family has been shown to be highly effective at improving communication and interactions.

8.  Create positive habits and patterns

Eating healthy food one time will not provide long-lasting benefits. Having fun just one time also will not provide long-lasting benefits. Both healthy eating and having fun are most beneficial when consistently practiced over a long period of time. And the health benefits just keep on improving. Make a conscious effort to find activities you find enjoyable and fun, and find people (new or old friends, family members, co-workers, etc.) you discovery fun to be around. Make it a habit to have fun every day and create a pattern of your fun activities.

9.  Relive your fun times

Keep a journal of your fun activities; take pictures or collect mementos. Once a month go back and review your adventures. Just reliving these good memories will help improve your health on all levels. And reviewing these fun times with the people who originally shared them with you, will enhance not only your health, but the health of everyone involved.

Make having fun outdoors a significant part of your daily activities. Having fun is good for you and being outdoors is good for you – so it just naturally follows that having fun outdoors is especially good for you!
